Now that winter is (almost) coming to an end, you need to begin thinking how to prepare the lawn for spring. Winters can leave the trees, shrubs, and grass in your lawn hungry for nutrients and sunshine. A blanket of snow and ice can leave them dormant and dry, so if you want a lush and full lawn, you will need to follow the tips below to make sure your lawn is ready for spring.
Do Some Cleaning
The first step on how to prepare the lawn for spring is to clean any debris like twigs and leaves that may have gathered over the cold season. Air blowers are often easier than rakes. This step will make it easier for you to mow your lawn since debris can clog the lawn mower. Such debris can also prevent fertilizers and other minerals from being properly absorbed by your lawn.
Apply Fertilizer and Weed Killer
A combination of different fertilizers and pre-emergents early in spring can do your grass wonders. The former feeds the grass while the later prevents crabgrass. Later on, around 6-8 weeks after, you can apply the products again with a combination of weed kills. In order to have a lush lawn, you need to prevent crabgrass at all costs so that you don’t spend most of the season fighting it instead of growing new flowers.
Mow Often and Early
Mowing the lawn only once a week in spring is one of the biggest mistakes that homeowners can make. When you cut the grass when it gets too high, it can stunt the roots. This limits their ability to reproduce and leaves a barren looking lawn. You should mow the lawn every five days in spring to ensure that the lawn comes out fuller and thicker.
Trim the Trees
Dead branches can actually be quite dangerous since when they are left unattended, they can fall and cause potential injuries and property damage. You may want to hire a tree trimmer to climb up into the tree and cut out any dead branches of the tree.
Pick Out the Best, Heavy Mulch
Replacing the mulch is an important step in preparing a lawn for spring. First, you need to edge out the flower beds, make sure your lawn is cared for, and trim back any dead leaves and branches before you can replace the mulch. Hardwood bark mulch is often preferred over ground wooden chips that have just been dyed brown since the mulch lasts longer and looks better.
If you want a lush green lawn in spring, you will have to work on the tips above to get your yard ready for spring!
