Top 7 Tips to Prepare Your Garden for Spring Season

Winter camouflages the mesmerizing beauty of a garden with its white, snowy layer. Once a lively, lush green garden becomes so morbid, all clad in white. On the other hand, fans of gardening don’t have much to do either.

As winter nears its end, the gardening lovers brace themselves to reclaim their gardens’ former ‘green glory’. Here, we will share seven tips to help you prepare your garden for the spring season.

1.     Soil Inspection

To get your garden prepared for spring, start by inspecting the soil. It is a serious mistake if you begin working the soil before it is ready for new plantation. Frequent snowfalls or rains dampen and trample the soil. Working on the same soil will make it more compact owing to treading and using machinery.

To verify if the soil is ready for planting, take the following steps:

  • Pick a ball of soil. If it doesn’t break, it will be too early to work on the soil.
  • If the soil ball breaks apart, it is a positive sign to proceed.
  • You can test the soil using a soil testing kit.

This step is crucial to ensure you start off your spring gardening preparation in the right manner.

2.     Clean up the Perennial

If you didn’t clip the perennial in the fall, you can do it now. As soon as the soil gets dry, start cleaning up the perennial plants.

  • Throw the dead plants into your compost bin.
  • Perennials like hellebore, buddleia, lavender and coral bells need pruning only.
  • Cut the grass to a height so it remains under your feet when you walk on it.

3.     Compost Area

Though commercial composts are available, using a piece of land in the garden is an unparalleled option. Reserve some area for compost, and you already have dead plants, pruned perennial and grass to fill your earthy compost.

4.     Get the Hose Ready

In spring, your garden will demand lots of water and return the favor with lush green grass and blooming flowers. So, clean the hose properly and service a few parts if needed. The purpose is to ensure that the hose can water the garden evenly.

5.     Inspect and Clean Your Gardening Tools

Your gardening tools will be your best allies in your ‘mission spring garden’. What if your gardening tools are dirty, blunt, rusty or out of order?

It is time you incepted and ordered your gardening toolkit:

  • Firstly, clean the tools you have in your gardening kit
  • Now check all the tools thoroughly to ensure they are functional
  • Lubricate and sharpen the ones in need for easier digging and pruning
  • Clean, check and service the power tools

In addition, to help you work with ease, cleaning also helps in stopping the transfer of plant diseases.

6.     Arrange Pots and Canisters for Planting

Inspect all the plant pots to identify cracked, weakened, or broken pots, and take them out if you find any.

  • Get some new pots (if needed)
  • Repaint a few to give a new and colorful look to the garden

7.     Get Plant Seeds

  • Go through a few gardening magazines too for planting ideas.
  • Prepare a list of the plants you would like to grow in spring.
  • Order the plant seeds.

There you go! You are all set to ‘greenify’ your garden for the spring season once again, even better than the last year.
